What do the words UMF10+ and UMF15+ mean?

UMF (Unique Manuka Factor), also known as the "unique manuka factor", is a special ingredient only found in manuka honey. It has strong and unique antibacterial and antioxidative properties and is not affected by various external factors such as light, high temperature, and digestive enzymes, remaining stable for a long time. It can also strengthen the immune system and has a natural healing effect.

We often see many honeys advertised as UMF5+, UMF10+, UMF15+, and UMF20+ on the market. What is the difference between them? In fact, the plus sign "+" represents the concentration of UMF antibacterial active substances, while the number represents the level. Therefore, UMF10+ means that its antibacterial ability is the same as that of a 10% aqueous solution of phenol, and so on.

So far, the highest UMF value of manuka honey found is about 25+, and its production is determined according to the climate and rainfall of the year. Among commercially available products, the highest value of UMF is around 20+.

If you see UMF25+ or UMF30+ products on the market, you should be cautious about their authenticity.

What kind of crowd is suitable for what value of UMF? In general:

  • UMF5+: It has very low medicinal properties and can be used as ordinary honey.
  • UMF10+: It is health honey suitable for people with low immunity, such as the elderly.
